Woodturner's Dye Kit

How often have you finished a turning project and realized it wasn't exactly the color you wanted?  I found myself mixing cups of dye when all I wanted to do was make a light green pen turning an aqua green, or a corn cob pen that came out pale red needed to be dark red.

Right side shows lathe applied dyeCorn Cobs do not take dye predictably in a dye tank. Most dye a light shade or are irregular in dye absorption. The right side of this stabilized corn cob shows a slight green cast from the dye tank. The left side was dyed on the lathe to a uniform shade of green.

Red Corn Cob This cob absorbed enough dye in the tank to appear pink. Lathe applied dyed on right obtained the desired dark red.

I developed this dye kit for ease of use on lathe turnings. It is best suited for use on pre-dyed resin stabilized woods. (AcryliWood and Dymondwood). On these woods it is intended for use in conjunction with a lacquer or shellac based   friction polish.

Included are 2 oz size dropper bottles of Red, Blue, Yellow, Green, Teal (Cyan), Black, and Brown organic solvent dye. Three extra empty bottles are included for your convenience. Dye is highly concentrated, so you may wish to further dilute some colors or custom mix to achieve other colors.

Please Note: In order to simplify shipping requirements the dye kit is shipped dry without solvent (not included). Slightly less than one pint of denatured alcohol is required to fill seven dye bottles. This way, the dye kit can be shipped by standard mail.

Kits are $18.75 each. Shipping for the dye kit only is $5.50 within the USA via USPS priority mail. Replacement bottles of individual colors are $3.25 each. Empty 2 oz dropper bottles are 49¢ each.
To use dye kit you will need to provide approximately one pint of denatured alcohol and lathe friction polish.

Dye Kit Applications Tips

Color hues can easily be adjusted or shades darkened. Best results are achieved if radical color changes are not attempted. For example, a light green turning can be made darker green, or shifted yellowish green, or aqua green with good results. But attempting to change a gold turning to blue will not likely yield satisfactory results.

Application instructions are included on the AcryliWood Information page.
